KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) and Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) have entered into a strategic partnership to explore sustainable energy solutions, green mobility and energy-efficient rail infrastructure.

In a joint statement, the companies said the collaboration would initially focus on the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, specifically the Bukit Chagar Immigration, Customs and Quarantine (ICQ) Complex and Wadi Hana Depot.

The MoU covers three key areas, namely solar energy solutions, electric vehicle (EV) charging and green mobility, as well as electrical reliability and maintenance services.

Under the agreement, both parties will explore the development and deployment of renewable energy systems at suitable facilities, alongside energy-saving initiatives aimed at reducing electricity consumption and operating costs.

They will also assess the potential installation of EV charging facilities at selected MRT Corp premises to complement public transport infrastructure and encourage greener mobility.

The collaboration will further examine ways to strengthen the safety, reliability and operational resilience of electrical systems supporting critical rail facilities.

MRT Corp chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim said the partnership marked an expansion of the company's role beyond infrastructure development to ensuring the long-term operational efficiency and sustainability of its assets.

"As MRT Corp takes on the responsibility of operating Wadi Hana Depot, the ICQ Complex and RTS Station at Bukit Chagar, our priorities extend beyond infrastructure delivery to ensuring these facilities are managed efficiently, reliably and sustainably," he said.

He added that TNB's energy expertise would help MRT Corp explore practical solutions to improve energy efficiency and strengthen operational resilience.

TNB president and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Shamsul Ahmad said the collaboration reflected the importance of integrating sustainable energy solutions into critical infrastructure development and operations.

"Reliable electricity is fundamental to the effective operation of public transport infrastructure.

"Through this collaboration, TNB looks forward to working with MRT Corp to explore energy solutions that can improve energy efficiency, strengthen electrical reliability and support the adoption of renewable energy at suitable facilities," he said.

The companies said the partnership would support Malaysia's energy transition aspirations under the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).

The collaboration builds on their existing working relationship across the MRT1, MRT2, Penang Mutiara Line and RTS Link projects.

The RTS Link was selected as the starting point following its recent achievement of a five-star Sustainable INFRASTAR rating awarded by the Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia.

Both parties will also explore opportunities to extend the collaboration to other rail infrastructure assets in the future.
