Railway Assets Corporation (RAC) has acknowledged concerns raised by commuters over worsening traffic conditions at Ipoh Railway Station, in Perak.
Responding to StarMetro’s article on Oct 9 titled “Ipoh railway commuters fume as traffic worsens”, RAC said in a statement via e-mail that it recognised that convenient access to public transport was important.
It also welcomed efforts by all stakeholders to improve traffic flow and the overall commuter experience.
RAC stated that it was open to working closely with the local authority and relevant agencies to identify practical measures that could help ease congestion around the station.
“We are currently in communication with the relevant parties on initiatives to improve traffic movement in the area,” it said.
“One of the contributing factors to congestion is vehicles waiting for extended periods at the designated pick-up and drop-off lane, particularly during train arrival times.
“We appeal for the cooperation of the public to stop only for a maximum of two minutes for pick-up and drop-off purposes in front of the station, to ensure smoother traffic flow for all users.”
RAC had also previously said that the railway station was undergoing upgrading works, which included full closure of the front parking area from Sept 1.
To assist commuters, it said it had shared information − via video links and posts on its social media page − on designated pick-up and drop-off locations as well as alternative parking options.
“RAC appreciates the patience and cooperation of all commuters during this period, and remains committed to supporting improvements that enhance accessibility and convenience at Ipoh Railway Station,” it added.
StarMetro reported that traffic congestion along Jalan Panglima Bukit Gantang Wahab left the railway station commuters exasperated, with ongoing upgrading works turning peak-hour travel into a daily bottleneck.
Metal hoardings put up to facilitate station upgrades have closed off parts of the parking area and narrowed access roads, making it difficult for drivers to manoeuvre during busy periods.
RAC said the road in front of the station was outside its purview and suggested seeking input from the local authorities and traffic enforcement agencies.
