Several food courts and hawker centres in Iskandar Puteri will be upgraded and modernised as part of an initiative to revamp 200 food courts and hawker centres around malaysia.
Mayor Datuk Hasrin Kamal Hashim said the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) allocated RM60mil to fund the programme, with RM300,000 to RM500,000 available for each food court or hawker centre.
“The facelift will transform traditional food courts into cleaner, more organised and comfortable spaces for both hawkers and customers,” he said in an interview.
Locations will be chosen based on the facilities’ age and condition, visitor traffic and need for better public amenities.
“We will also consider factors like cleanliness, safety and comfort, along with the potential to boost the local economy.”
He said eateries under consideration were food courts in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah and Taman Sri Pulai, as well as Gerai Statik Tun Teja.
Hasrin said Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP) was also expanding infrastructure under initiatives such as the RM13mil Impian Emas Community Hub in Taman Impian Emas, Skudai.
He said another RM10mil project integrated hawker centres as well as night markets in Taman Impian Emas, while providing systematic trading sites to streamline business operations.
Separately, he said MBIP was allocating RM400,000 to maintain two public markets – Taman Perling and Taman Universiti – over the next two years.
Hasrin added that this was part of initiatives to repair, upgrade and modernise ageing public markets to make them more senior and disabled-friendly.
He said MBIP also planned to build Pasar Awam Sejahtera in Taman Nusantara in Gelang Patah, modelled after Singapore’s Geylang Serai Market.
