THOSE born in 2008 in Selangor whose parents had registered them for the Tabung Warisan Anak Selangor (Tawas) scheme are now eligible to receive RM1,500.
Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shaari urged them to come forward to claim the incentive.
The programme offers a RM1,500 cash incentive to eligible members upon reaching the age of 18.
Tawas was opened to those born between 2008 and 2018 and 2026 marks the first year of payments to Tawas recipients.
“About 13,000 out of the 21,000 eligible recipients born in 2008 have come forward,” said Amirudin during the Tuaian Anak Harapan Tawas presentation ceremony for Tawas recipients.
“We will intensify promotions over the next few months to encourage eligible recipients to claim their allocation.
“One constraint we are facing is due to the changes in contact numbers and addresses of both the beneficiaries and their family members.
“Beneficiaries have one year from the date of their 18th birthday to claim the incentive,” he said during the ceremony which was held at a convention centre in Klang.
A total of RM31.51mil had been set aside for the Tawas scheme this year, said the Mentri Besar.
Amirudin added that Tawas was replaced by Iltizam Anak Selangor (Anas) in 2022, which provides an educational savings contribution of RM100 per year for five years (totalling RM500) in a Skim Simpanan Pendidikan Nasional (SSPN) account for eligible newborns.
Iman Nurfaramiea Salimie, a Tawas recipient, also won a laptop during a lucky draw at the ceremony.
“I initially planned to use the money to buy a tablet, so the lucky draw prize was an unexpected but much welcomed win.
“I will now use the money for my education expenses, with some set aside for my parents,” said the Kampung Sijangkang, Kuala Langat, resident.
Iman Nurfaramiea, who is pursuing a diploma in retail management in Politeknik Nilai, Negri Sembilan, hopes to run her own cosmetics business one day.
Hemnesh Varatharaju said the RM1,500 he received would likely be split as expenses for his current studies at Kolej Tingkatan Enam Sri Istana, Klang, and university later on.
“I hope to pursue a cybersecurity degree at Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia, and eventually work in the Defence Ministry,” said the Taman Sentosa, Klang, resident.
Also present were Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor (Yawas) chief executive officer Gan Pei Nei and Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI) Selangor group chief executive officer Datuk Saipolyazan M. Yusop.
Separately, Amirudin said focus group discussions were still being conducted with various parties for the Selangor 2027 budget which would be tabled next month.
“We aim to drive Selangor’s economy towards RM500bil within the next one-and-a-half years.
“The budget will address issues such as rubbish collection, flood management and liveability.
“We will also identify the needs of target groups, such as schoolchildren.”
For information on Tawas, recipients can contact Yawas or their assemblyman’s service centre.
