Terengganu boosts waste removal from Pulau Redang

Daily waste collection trips will soon replace the current alternate-day schedule from Pulau Redang to the mainland, as Terengganu government moves to clear growing heaps of rubbish on the resort island.

State local government, housing and health committee chairman Datuk Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah said the proposal was among matters discussed during Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar’s visit to Pulau Redang with members of the state executive council.

Wan Sukairi said the working visit focused on resolving solid waste management issues, including evaluating operations of the island’s incinerator and inspecting a new waste storage facility being built by Kuala Terengganu City Council (MBKT).

“We inspected the waste storage facility being built by MBKT, which is expected to be completed soon.

“Hopefully, the waste problem on Pulau Redang will not recur,” he told Bernama.

Wan Sukairi said they were briefed by MBKT, the State Economic Planning Unit (Upen) and relevant stakeholders including chalet and resort operators, during the visit.

He said Terengganu government was also addressing drainage issues on the island and looking into the best ways to resolve them.

“Hopefully, with the input gathered and proposals submitted, the solid waste and drainage issues on Pulau Redang can be resolved,” he said.

In a media statement, Upen said state leaders reviewed the solid waste and sewage management infrastructure to identify short- and long-term remedies.

It said the state government would continue working with relevant agencies and resort operators to ensure solutions were implemented effectively.

“Protecting the environment, ensuring the sustainability of Pulau Redang and the comfort of visitors will remain a priority,” the statement read.
