Haze: Education Dept needs contingency plan for schools with SPM nearing, says Amirudin

SELANGOR Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has urged the Education Department to prepare a contingency plan for schools following the recent closures due to the haze situation.

"Although we expect the haze to clear by mid-October, the latest meteorological report indicates it may drag into November.

"If it extends into November and December, we will need a contingency plan for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations," he told a press conference in Sepang on Friday (Oct 9).

The SPM examinations are scheduled for Oct 26 to Dec 1.

Amirudin said the state respects the directive of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia to close schools.

As of today, Amirudin said, nearly all schools have implemented home-based teaching and learning.

"We will meet with the Education Department to ensure that the children's education is not disrupted while they are unable to attend school, especially since the SPM dates are approaching.

"I want to see the department's plan first. If it is sound, we will proceed accordingly," he said.

Earlier, Amirudin witnessed the signing of an MoU between Selangor Information Technology and Digital Economy Corporation (Sidec) and TCab Tech, a China-based enterprise that specialises in the development of electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft.
