CALLS are mounting for Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to relocate electric vehicle charging bays (EVCBs) built on existing public parking bays in Taman Tun Dr Ismail.
Taman Tun Dr Ismail Residents Association (TTDIRA) said the EVCBs should be moved to other locations.
“We have previously raised concerns about the reduction of public parking spaces in TTDI due to EVCBs and the lack of bays, but the problem remains unresolved,” said RA secretary-general Shaik Zafrul Shaik Abdul Shukkor in a statement.
He said the bays including those in Jalan Tun Mohd Fuad 3, still cannot be used for regular parking.
The association also highlighted misuse, from non-EVs taking up the bays to drivers lingering long after their charging sessions end.
“The conversion of existing bays for dedicated use limits parking options, which makes securing parking near business premises increasingly difficult.
“Residents have also raised the absence of effective enforcement monitoring at the locations involved,” he said.
On Aug 3, StarMetro reported that DBKL would no longer convert existing parking bays into EVCBs to address the shortage of parking spaces.
In the article, DBKL was reported saying that for new EVCB applications, companies or charge point operators (CPO) must submit proposals to construct additional parking bays at suitable locations rather than utilising existing space.
Shaik Zafrul said DBKL’s move aligned with concerns the association had previously raised regarding the reduction of public parking facilities in TTDI.
“We would like to invite DBKL and CPOs for a site visit to assess the actual situation,” he said.
