An investment worth RM170mil will see expansion to Genting Highlands Premium Outlets (GPO) in Pahang with new retail brands.

Genting Simon Sdn Bhd president and chief executive officer Jean Marie Pin Harry said the second phase would add about 70,000sq ft to GPO’s current lettable area of 300,000sq ft.

“The project is slated for completion in the fourth-quarter of 2027, and will further enhance the tenant mix and overall retail offering.

“There will be 25 brands taking up the new space and we will unveil the brands at a later date,” he told reporters in conjunction with the 15th anniversary celebration of Johor Premium Outlets (JPO) in Kulai, Johor.

JPO is located at the intersection of the North-South Expressway and Second Link Expressway, and highly accessible to traffic going to and from Johor Baru and Singapore.

Among guests attending the event were the Johor unity, heritage and culture committee chairman P. Pannir Selvam, Genting Plantations Bhd chief executive and executive director Datuk Lim Keong Hui and Simon Property Group International Development and Finance vice-president Uchenna Akujuo.

Pin Harry said JPO, opened in 2011, receives six million visitors annually, half of whom are Malaysians.

The Genting Highlands and Johor Premium Outlets' success formula have made them unique, standalone destinations that garnered top votes.

He said the majority of foreign visitors were Singaporeans; followed by Indonesians from nearby Riau province, mainland Chinese, Middle Easterners and Indian nationals.

“We expect more Singaporeans to visit JPO when the Johor Baru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS Link) is up and running in January 2027,” said Pin Harry.

Lim said 15 years on and the Premium Outlets concept had grown into a regional portfolio spanning Malaysia and Indonesia.

“South-East Asia’s first hilltop Premium Outlets Centre, GPO, was opened in 2017, followed by Jakarta Premium Outlets in Tangerang in 2025,” he said.

Lim said the expansion of GPO reflected the company’s confidence in the long-term potential of the Premium Outlets model and demand from both shoppers and brand partners.

Akujuo said the 15-year milestone reflected the strength of Simon Property Group’s partnership with Genting and shared confidence in the long-term growth of Premium Outlets in South-East Asia.

“We are proud of what we have achieved together and look forward to continuing this successful partnership,” he said.

Pannir Selvam said JPO had become a key pillar in Johor’s retail and tourism ecosystem and was a successful example of the Iskandar Malaysia vision in action.

“Johor’s economic initiatives, like the Johor Singapore Special Economic Zone, will help destinations like JPO attract more visitors, investors and businesses,” he said.

Genting Simon Sdn Bhd is a joint venture between Genting Plantations Bhd and Simon Property Group.
