KULAI: A motorsports influencer and seven others have been placed under a four-day remand over their alleged involvement in illegal racing along the Second Link expressway.
Aged between 26 and 45, they were brought to the Kulai Magistrate’s Court at about 8.30am yesterday.
Magistrate R. Salini issued the remand order, which runs until Thursday, following an application by police under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The remand was sought to facilitate investigations under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act.
All eight suspects wore face masks when they arrived at the court. Two of them, including the influencer, also wore hoodies to avoid being filmed.
Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad had previously said the suspects were nabbed on Sunday by a team from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Kulai district police headquarters.
The arrests came about after a brief video, which went viral, showing two motorcyclists racing on the highway.
This is believed to have taken place between KM33, near the Senai Utara toll exit, and KM31, near the Johor Premium Outlet exit.
The video also showed several people apparently blocking the highway to allow the race to take place.
The suspects were also seen setting off firecrackers to celebrate the end of the race.
Police are investigating the case under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act, which covers reckless and dangerous driving.
