RESTAURANTS, retailers and other everyday businesses must have access to artificial intelligence support to help them manage rising costs and improve productivity, says the Malaysia Entrepreneurs Development Association (PUMM).
Its president, Datuk Dr Teh Tai Yong urged the government to widen access to AI grants, tax incentives and practical training across all sectors.
“AI assistance must reach ordinary SMEs, not only technology companies,” he said at the Malaysia Role Model Recognition (MRMR) 2026 gala dinner at Sunway Resort Hotel on Friday.
He said AI could help smaller businesses conduct research faster, automate routine work, communicate across languages and improve customer service at lower cost.
“It is no longer whether we should use AI, but how we use it effectively.”

Teh said PUMM supported higher incomes for workers but stressed that wage increases must be accompanied by improvements in productivity.
He urged stronger government support for automation, digitalisation and employee upskilling to help SMEs sustain higher wages.
However, he reminded entrepreneurs that embracing technology should go hand in hand with responsible business practices.
“Good governance means running our companies properly and transparently. Social responsibility means looking after employees, customers and communities.”
He said environmental, social and governance practices were also becoming increasingly important for SMEs seeking to enter larger supply chains and international markets.
Referring to the event’s theme, “Rewrite the Rules, Leave Your Timeprint”, Teh urged entrepreneurs to adapt while remaining grounded in their values.
“But while business models may change, our core values should not change. Integrity, responsibility and the courage to do the right thing should remain constant.”
The gala also marked the installation of PUMM’s central and state liaison committees for the 2026–2028 term.
Iconic Role Model recipients included AirAsia co-founder Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, community service advocate Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman president and chief executive officer Prof Datuk Dr Ewe Hong Tat.
Teh said PUMM had more than 3,000 members, with active state liaison committees across 10 states.
He urged incoming leaders to focus on contributing and creating value, saying their legacy would be measured by their service during their term.
Guest of honour Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah launched MRMR 2026 and presented awards.
