SEVEN food outlets in Johor Baru were instructed to temporarily cease operations this year because of the presence of cockroaches, flies and rats.
Mayor Datuk Mohd Haffiz Ahmad said the premises were issued closure notices for failing to meet hygiene standards.
"Seven cases were recorded so far this year where checks conducted by Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) enforcement officials found the pests at food preparation areas and ingredient storage areas.
"The premises involved were instructed to close for at least three days, subject to their compliance with instructions and hygiene standards," he told the council’s monthly full board meeting on Friday (Aug 28).
He said the closures were not merely to punish the operators but also a step for them to correct their mistakes and to safeguard public safety and health.
Haffiz added that the premises were only allowed to resume operations after they took corrective measures and passed MBJB’s checks.
