Desaru blends grit with getaway

Kick-off across the sand on a rolling start for the swimming leg of Ironman 70.3 Desaru Coast.

Something about the coastal stretch of Desaru in Kota Tinggi, Johor, makes pushing one’s physical limits feel a little less punishing.

Perhaps it is the sweeping sea views, the resort atmosphere or the promise of unwinding the moment the finish line is crossed.

That balance of grit and getaway was at the heart of Desaru Coast Multisport Festival, where seasoned triathletes, curious newcomers, and families gathered for a weekend of endurance and entertainment.

The flagship event of the three-day festival was the Ironman 70.3 Desaru Coast, featuring a 1.9km swim in the open sea, 90km road cycling and tropical 21.1km run.

Shorter races like the Olympic and Sprint triathlons offered beginners a gentler introduction to the sport, while younger participants joined in the fun through Ironkids.

Beyond the race course, the weekend buzzed with beach sports, fitness sessions, pop-up markets, live music and food stalls, making it a complete holiday experience for all ages.
