THE spirit of inclusivity was on full display at Desa Mentari in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, as residents from diverse backgrounds gathered to celebrate Malaysia Day at a multipurpose hall.
True unity is built on ensuring no one gets left behind, said Sunway Group president Datuk Mohd Anuar Taib.
Through the #SunwayforGood Food Programme, which was part of Sunway Group’s National Day and Malaysia Day campaign themed “Sejahtera Bersama”, Anuar said the group had helped more than 13,000 people through five food-based initiatives.
“Those who benefitted from the programme included the indigenous community, children, senior citizens and families in need,” he said during the Malaysia Day celebration at Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) multipurpose hall in PJS6/1.
The event was graced by Selangor princess Tengku Zatashah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who joined in distributing free food and beverages to some 2,000 Desa Mentari residents.
The refreshments were prepared by entrepreneurs under the Selangor Youth Community (SAY), with all costs borne by Sunway Group.
Free health screening services were also available at the event.
As part of the programme, 5,000 burgers were prepared by residents of Rumah Sahabat Hulu Langat (RSHL) – an addiction rehabilitation centre – for distribution to underserved communities.
SAY chief executive officer Aiman Nazri said the residents developed an interest in starting a burger business after the training.
“SAY provided them RM5,000 in business capital and helped them apply for a business licence as well as register their business under Companies Commission of Malaysia,” he said.
A total of 2,000 of the free burgers were distributed to Desa Mentari residents during the event.
Desa Mentari Komuniti Madani chairman Mohd Zaini Saleh, who was present, said children should be involved in nation building.
“As we celebrate Malaysia Day, we must ensure that our children can be educated about the history and direction of our country.
“For this, they must be encouraged to participate in various programmes, such as this one organised by Sunway Group, to feel the Malaysia Day atmosphere for themselves,” he said.
Dressed in vibrant outfits, a group of children from Desa Mentari sang the patriotic song Saya Anak Malaysia and waved the Jalur Gemilang.
