Petaling Jaya councillor Terence Tan, 48, who passed away this morning (Sept 22), is remembered by his peers as jovial, hardworking and dedicated.
Tan, a DAP whip at Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), had served as a councillor since 2010.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh told StarMetro that Tan would be missed.
“He was always chirpy and helpful, and the energy he brought to the room is difficult to replace.
"Thank you, Tan, for devoting your youth to nation-building. Petaling Jaya is a better place because of your labour,” said Hannah.
Meanwhile, Selangor investment, trade and mobility committee chairman Ng Sze Han extended his heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to Tan’s family on behalf of DAP Selangor.
“Losing him at such a young age is a profound loss to his family, the community he served and all of us who had the privilege of working alongside him," he said.
Bukit Gasing assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran, in a social media post, said: “Terence was a pillar at MBPJ as one of the most senior councillors, and party whip for many years.
“To me, he was a trusted confidant and a brother in arms from days long past. We started this journey together (as politicians) ages ago, and his comments and jokes from my first election campaign remain fresh. He was honest and kind,” he said.
Subang Jaya assemblyman Michelle Ng, also in a social media post, reminisced about the days when she and Tan would exchange notes on parenting and challenges they faced as first-time parents.
Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohd Yazid Sairi and deputy mayor Sharinaz Samsudin extended their condolences to Tan’s family and expressed their gratitude for his service to the city.
Former MBPJ councillor Richard Yeoh described Tan as helpful and effective, going all out to assist residents whenever mishaps and emergencies arose.
“When first appointed as a councillor in his early 30s, he worked well with all mayors, fellow councillors and state officials.
“He will be missed by all who knew him,” said Richard.
Another former MBPJ councillor, Derek Fernandez, said Tan had made difficult decisions at MBPJ for the benefit of residents.
“I will always remember Terence’s smile. At MBPJ, I remember he stood up several times in support of residents’ interests under tremendous pressure to do the opposite. I will miss him dearly,” he said.
MBPJ councillor Nalina Nair said he was like a brother at work.
“He loved and cared deeply for his family, friends, colleagues, residents and everyone who crossed paths with him. He will forever be in our hearts,” she said.
Councillor Suraise Gengiah said he was overwhelmed by Tan’s passing, as they were good friends and had worked well together at the city council.
Tan leaves behind his wife and three-year-old daughter.
