FOOD delivery riders in Central Teluk Pulai will soon have a dedicated rest stop following approval from the Klang Royal City Council (MBDK).
Mayor Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain said the shelter, called MBDK@Teduh − short for “Tempat Elok Dikhaskan Untuk Hentian” − will cost about RM150,000 to build.
He said MBDK had approved an allocation of RM120,000, while the remaining RM30,000 would be funded through a state grant.
“We have designed the pit stop and the facility along Jalan Teluk Pulai to provide a comfortable space for food delivery riders to rest, recharge and wait for customer orders between deliveries,” he said.
According to Abd Hamid, the facility will include phone charging ports, sheltered waiting areas and other conveniences.
“This project demonstrates MBDK’s commitment to creating a more inclusive and people-centric city by addressing the practical needs of workers in the gig economy,” the mayor added.
Abd Hamid noted that the rest stop, strategically located at Central Teluk Pulai, would be convenient for riders operating in one of the busiest commercial areas in the city.
He said that apart from improving rider welfare, the dedicated rest area is also expected to contribute to road safety.
“Riders who have access to a proper place to rest are less likely to experience fatigue, particularly during long work shifts, thus enabling them to remain alert while travelling on Klang’s roads,” he said.
Resident Avtar Singh, 64, agrees that Jalan Teluk Pulai is a suitable location for the shelter, as many riders congregate there to collect orders from the area’s numerous food outlets.
Delivery rider Mohd Hanafiah Shaari, 35, also supported the move, noting that the shelter would offer protection from the scorching afternoon sun and heavy rain.
