CONSTRUCTION of the new campus for SJKC Heng Ee in Sungai Tiram, Bayan Lepas, can begin after final approval was granted by the Education Ministry.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the project should proceed according to schedule, or begin earlier if possible.

She said the school had raised about RM22mil through public donations and fundraising efforts, but additional funds were still needed to complete facilities such as classrooms, laboratories and furniture.

“We want to ensure the school is completed as soon as possible because demand for educational facilities continues to grow,” she told reporters after presenting the project approval letter during a ceremony at SJKC Heng Ee in Jalan Macalister.

Fadhlina said maintenance allocations would be considered once the new campus was completed as the school was government-aided.

She said the ministry approved the relocation application on June 25, 2025, following years of efforts by the board of governors and education advocates.

The new campus will be built on a 1.43ha site in Sungai Tiram in the southwest district, next to SMJK Heng Ee (Cawangan Bayan Baru).

The development comprises three buildings, with the first phase involving the construction of two blocks at an estimated cost of RM30mil.

Heng Ee board of directors chairman Tan Sri Alex Ooi Kee Liang said the achievement was made possible with support from Ideal Property Group, which is bearing about RM18mil of the construction cost.

“Today marks a historic moment for the Heng Ee community as the vision of building a new campus has finally become a reality,” he said.

Present were Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying, Penang trade and national unity committee chairman Goh Choon Aik, Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng, Penang Education Department deputy director (planning and management sector) Mohamad Zawawi Ahmad, Northeast District education officer Baharuddin Hashim and SJKC Heng Ee headmaster Lee Chian Jau.
