Selangor government is making strides in strengthening food security by advancing modern aquaculture and rural development.

Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI Selangor) has formalised a strategic partnership with Farmerex Sdn Bhd through two agreements for the development of a commercial aquaculture farming project at the Sungai Lang Fisheries Industrial Zone (ZIPS) in Sabak Bernam, said a media statement.

They involve a land lease agreement covering 20ha for aquaculture farming purposes, and a joint-venture agreement for the development of a commercial aquaculture farm.

MBI Selangor was represented by Sabak Bernam Development Zone head Zannifa Azura Ahmad while Farmerex was represented by its managing director Teoh Han Boon.

The document-exchanging ceremony in Kuala Lumpur was witnessed by state rural development, unity and consumer affairs committee chairman Datuk Rizam Ismail, who is also Sabak Bernam consultative council chairman.

Commenting on the collaboration, MBI Selangor group chief executive officer Datuk Saipolyazan M. Yusop said the strategic collaboration marked another significant step by MBI Selangor in realising the state’s agenda for sustainable and high-impact economic development.

“The development of modern aquaculture at ZIPS will not only strengthen the state’s food supply chain but also create new economic opportunities for local communities, particularly in Sabak Bernam.

“MBI Selangor remains committed to facilitating strategic investments that drive high- value industry development in line with Sabda’s (Sabak Bernam Development Area) aspiration as a new economic growth driver in northern Selangor,” he said in a press statement.

Farmerex is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Camaroe Bhd, a company listed on the ACE Market of Bursa Malaysia with extensive experience in the aquaculture industry and fisheries processing.

The collaboration marked a significant milestone in advancing modern aquaculture development at ZIPS, with a primary focus on high-technology commercial shrimp farming.

The project will also be the first operational venture to commence at ZIPS since its official launch by Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari on April 25.

As one of the key projects under the Sabak Bernam Development Area (Sabda), the development of ZIPS aligned with the aspirations of the state to strengthen food security, advance the blue economy and accelerate sustainable and inclusive rural development.

ZIPS is envisioned as an integrated fisheries industry hub encompassing aquaculture farming, seafood processing, cold chain logistics and downstream value-added industries.

This development is expected to strengthen the state’s fisheries ecosystem while increasing local seafood production capacity to meet both domestic and export demand.

In addition to supporting national food security priorities, the project is anticipated to serve as a catalyst for local economic growth through the creation of quality employment opportunities, talent development and greater youth participation in technology-driven aquaculture.

The collaboration is part of Selangor’s commitment to attract strategic investments, stimulate regional economic growth and strengthen Sabak Bernam’s position as a progressive, sustainable and competitive emerging economic hub.
