AS digital access becomes increasingly essential to education, a household retail brand has donated its corporate computers for positive social impact.
A joint handover by MR DIY Foundation and Soroptimist International Damansara saw Sekolah Tunas Bakti in Kuala Lumpur receiving refurbished laptops previously used within MR DIY operations.
Since the programme began in March 2025, MR DIY Foundation has contributed a total of 176 refurbished laptops, representing an estimated value of more than RM300,000.
The initiative has benefitted more than 8,000 students from underserved communities in five states, and helped divert some 530kg of electronic waste from disposal.
“Technology plays an increasingly important role in education, yet access to devices remains a challenge for some students and families,” said MR DIY Foundation chief executive officer Dr Zaleha Mohd Mydin in a statement.
“We are not only helping students access the tools they need to learn and thrive in a digital environment, but also demonstrating how responsible reuse can create positive outcomes for communities and the environment.
“Every refurbished laptop represents an opportunity to support a student’s educational journey while reducing unnecessary waste.”
To ensure usability, each laptop undergoes a thorough refurbishment process by MR DIY’s IT Department before being distributed to recipients identified through various collaborations with the foundation’s community partners.
The programme is part of the foundation’s efforts to create sustainable and meaningful impact through initiatives that support education, community well-being and responsible environmental stewardship.
