Mangrove swamps to be marked as protected zones

Saarani: Gazetting these areas can provide better legal protection.

GAZETTING mangrove swamps in coastal areas as protected zones is one of Perak’s long-term plans to preserve these locations and deter encroachment.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the state would identify potential areas that could be gazetted as permanent forest reserves or coastal protected zones.

“Having these areas gazetted can give better legal protection,” he said in reply to Datuk Shahrul Zaman Yahya (BN-Rungkup) during the Perak State Assembly question and answer session at Bangunan Perak Darul Ridzuan in Ipoh yesterday.

Saarani also said the state would integrate technologies like drones and remote sensing for efficient monitoring.

“Since 2026, a technical and enforcement unit has been holding monitoring activities every Wednesday to get preliminary information and take immediate action on the ground.

“Tree planting programmes at mangrove areas will be held with the local community as a way to restore affected locations too.”

Saarani said action under Section 425 of the National Land Code could be taken against those encroaching on state land.

“Those found guilty can be fined up to RM500,000 or jailed up to 10 years or both,” he said.

To an additional question by Shahrul Zaman on whether stricter laws were required to deter encroachment, Saarani said existing laws were sufficient.

“Without enforcement, laws will not be respected.

“We will have more frequent patrols at hotspots and if there is not enough manpower, we will find ways to resolve this.”
