University of Southampton Malaysia’s Strategic Growth Vision 2025-2030 to act as a catalyst for talent, innovation and industry collaboration

MALAYSIA is entering one of the most significant periods of transformation in its history.

Artificial intelligence (AI), advanced manufacturing, digital technologies and the green economy are reshaping industries at an unprecedented pace, creating new opportunities while redefining the skills needed for the future.

As the nation advances towards a more innovation-driven economy, universities must evolve just as rapidly to prepare graduates for a world where change is the only constant.

Responding to this rapidly changing landscape, the University of Southampton Malaysia (UoSM) has unveiled its Strategic Growth Vision 2025-2030.

This five-year roadmap reaffirms the university's commitment to developing future-ready talent, advancing impactful research and strengthening partnerships that contribute to Malaysia's long-term economic and social development.

The institution operates on the belief that changing minds changes the world, and it is that belief that underpins its Strategic Growth Vision and shapes how it educates, conducts research and works with industry, government and communities to create meaningful impact.

Located in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, UoSM is uniquely positioned to connect globally recognised academic excellence with Malaysia’s national priorities and Johor’s emergence as one of South-East Asia’s most dynamic economic regions.

As the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) accelerates investment in advanced manufacturing, digital infrastructure, healthcare, logistics and emerging technologies, the demand for highly skilled, globally minded graduates will continue to grow.

For UoSM, this presents not only an opportunity but also a responsibility.

UoSM provost and chief executive officer Prof Ehsan Mesbahi said that he believes higher education must move beyond its traditional role.

“Universities can no longer focus solely on awarding degrees. They must become places where talent is nurtured, ideas are transformed into solutions and partnerships create lasting value for society,” he said.

“Malaysia's future competitiveness will not be determined solely by investment or infrastructure. It will be determined by the quality of its people, the strength of its partnerships and its willingness to embrace new ideas.

“Through our Strategic Growth Vision, we want to contribute meaningfully to that future.”

Rather than focusing solely on institutional growth, the Strategic Growth Vision positions UoSM as a long-term partner in Malaysia’s development by aligning education, research and industry with the nation’s evolving priorities.

The vision reinforces the university’s role as a bridge between global academic excellence and the needs of students, employers, government and society.

At the heart of this approach is UoSM’s Triple Helix model, connecting education, research, and knowledge exchange and enterprise.

Through this model, education prepares graduates for meaningful careers; research generates mission-driven impact; and knowledge exchange links expertise to industry, government and communities.

A central priority of the vision is also to future-proof UoSM’s academic portfolio.

The university will continue to expand programmes that respond to emerging skills demand in AI, cybersecurity, intelligent systems, advanced automation, biomedical and health technology, actuarial science, risk management and digital transformation.

Student success remains at the heart of the university’s vision as UoSM believes every graduate should leave with more than an academic qualification.

They should graduate with confidence, curiosity, resilience and the ability to adapt to careers that continue to evolve. Academic excellence must be complemented by leadership, global perspectives, digital capabilities and lifelong learning.

The university intends to strengthen its student support ecosystem through enhanced academic coaching, employability development, alumni engagement, wellbeing support and a proposed Graduate Passport model.

The Graduate Passport will provide students with broader access to professional certifications, digital credentials, global mobility opportunities, international exposure and career development pathways.

Over time, this will support UoSM’s ambition to produce graduates who are employable, confident, mobile and prepared to lead in a rapidly changing world.

Research will continue to play a defining role in the university's future. Beyond producing publications, UoSM aims to generate knowledge that creates practical impact.

By bringing together researchers, policymakers, businesses and communities, the university seeks to develop solutions that improve lives while supporting Malaysia's innovation ecosystem.

Key research priorities include Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems, Digital Health and Biomedical Innovation, and the proposed Johor Living Lab, creating opportunities for collaboration that address national priorities while strengthening regional innovation capacity.

Partnerships also remain fundamental to the Strategic Growth Vision.

UoSM will continue strengthening collaboration with industry leaders, government agencies, professional bodies, international universities and community organisations to enhance curriculum development, internships, applied research, consultancy, innovation initiatives and talent development.

These collaborations ensure graduates gain industry-relevant experience while enabling research to respond directly to societal and economic needs.

As Johor continues its transformation into one of South-East Asia's most dynamic economic corridors, UoSM believes universities must play an active role in supporting sustainable growth by developing the skilled workforce, innovative thinking and collaborative partnerships that will underpin Malaysia's future competitiveness.

Prof Mesbahi said the Strategic Growth Vision ultimately reflects the university's long-term commitment to Malaysia.

“Our ambition is not simply to grow as a university. We want to be recognised as a trusted partner in Malaysia's future – developing graduates employers seek, delivering research that makes a meaningful difference, and building partnerships that strengthen industries, communities and society,” he said.

“At the UoSM, we believe that changing minds changes the world. Through our Strategic Growth Vision, we are reaffirming our commitment to preparing future-ready talent, advancing innovation and working alongside our partners to help build a stronger, more resilient and more prosperous Malaysia.”
