National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) Sarawak chapter has resolved more than 150 consumer complaints in Sibu since August 2023.
These issues range from digital scams to complex housing fraud.
MTPN Sarawak chairman Lucas Lau said the council’s track record, which included tackling service-related fraud and quality issues, demonstrated its credibility as a strategic partner in community development, rather than just a platform for grievances.
Speaking at a Hari Raya Aidilfitri event for itinerant individuals at Sibu Temporary Transit Centre, Lau advised victims of fraud to not suffer in silence.
“Do not hesitate to approach us if your rights have been violated.
“Prevention is better than cure, but we are here to deliver justice,” he said.
Lau attributed the consumer council’s success to the support of local leaders, including Bawang Assan assemblyman Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh and Sibu Resident Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman.
The event also highlighted MTPN’s shift towards social welfare.
This move earned praise from Mohamad Porkan, who said the council’s care for the homeless aligned with Sarawak Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, which balanced economic growth with social inclusivity.
“MTPN’s initiatives show that it is an organisation that seeks to ensure that no individual is neglected in receiving attention and aid,” he said.
Wong echoed the need for a caring society, and reassured the itinerant community that they were not forgotten.
“You are not alone,” he said.
“We, along with countless volunteers, are ready to help each person build their life regardless of background,” he added.
