Lau is now the new MTPN Sarawak president.
THE National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) has announced the appointment of Lucas Lau as its Sarawak region president.
The appointment recognised Lau’s commendable leadership of the MTPN Sibu branch, particularly in enhancing public awareness of consumer rights.
Lau expressed his gratitude to MTPN for the trust placed in him.
“I also wish to convey my appreciation to all MTPN Sarawak members for their dedication to strengthening the eight basic consumer rights through various awareness campaigns and social activities,” he said in a statement.
The eight basic consumer rights are: the right to basic needs, the right to safety, the right to information, the right to choose, the right to representation, the right to redress, the right to consumer education and the right to a healthy environment.
MTPN national president Datuk Dr Kevy Yeo described Lau’s appointment as a step in the right direction towards reinforcing MTPN’s role in Sarawak, as well as advancing efforts to defend consumer interests more effectively.
He said the council was confident the new leadership would continue to spearhead efforts in addressing consumer complaints and upholding justice for all levels of society.
“Under Lau’s leadership, MTPN Sibu has successfully handled more than 50 consumer complaint cases since August 2023, demonstrating the team’s efficiency and commitment to resolving issues,” Yeo noted.
“The branch is also actively conducting awareness programmes through social media, community engagement and media collaborations to ensure information on consumer rights is easily accessible to the public,” he added.
MTPN has also made consumer education one of its main priorities, particularly in empowering young people, to face challenges in the digital era.
In line with this objective, Lau led the signing of a memorandum of understanding last May between MTPN and University of Technology Sarawak to implement more awareness campaigns and community programmes focused on consumer education.
His achievements and sustained efforts in championing consumer issues − including tackling large-scale fraud and improving consumer literacy − had earned him recognition as the Sarawak consumer rights ambassador.
