PASSENGERS arriving at the Penang International Airport were greeted with festive cheer and gift bags in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

It was organised by Tourism Malaysia as part of the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign.

About 1,000 passengers from several international flights received the special welcome that took place simultaneously at nine airports, including in Selangor, Johor, Kedah, Perak, Sabah and Sarawak.

Tourism Malaysia deputy chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said it was aimed at making a good first impression.

“This programme lets them feel our warm hospitality,” he said in a press conference at the airport.

The gift bags contained mugs, fridge magnets and keychains with the VM2026 logo.

Passengers also arrived to the sound of kompang and were greeted by VM2026 sun bear mascots, Wira and Manja, and people wearing traditional outfits of the country’s diverse ethnic groups.

Yeoh said Tourism Malaysia was also stepping up promotional efforts through familiarisation trips and travel fairs.

“We organise familiarisation programmes for media and travel agencies, both domestic and overseas, to experience Penang for themselves.

“When they return to their respective countries, they can help promote the state.

“We are also participating in domestic and international travel fairs to market Penang to overseas and local travellers.”
