Tribunal awards RM1,000 refund to couple who felt shortchanged on wedding day

Muhammad Izwan and wife Noor Farah Shahira Mazlan faced disappointment on their wedding day when the wedding planner’s crew turned up late and didn’t complete the installations.

Unhappy with the services of a wedding planner, a technician took the company to the Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal.

Muhammad Izwan Hakim Herman Irmadi said he paid RM16,070 for the wedding package for his 2026 nuptials, but the deliverables were late and incomplete.

“It was supposed to be a joyous occasion for our family, but they really spoiled our mood,” he said outside the Tribunal at Menara Ansar in Johor Baru.

The 24-year-old claimant said he went to the company’s showroom at Taman Impiana in Kulai, Johor, on April 13, 2025, in preparation for his wedding on Jan 4, this year.

After discussing with the consultant, Muhammad Izwan chose a package for 1,000 guests inclusive of meals, wedding dais, floral wedding arch, walkway, wedding cake and makan berdamai (newlyweds’ first meal).

“The package excluded the RM2,000 rental of a multi-purpose hall in Taman Bukit Dahlia in Pasir Gudang and RM2,000 for photography and videography services,” he said.

Muhammad Izwan made a first payment of RM1,000 via bank transfer on April 18, last year, followed by RM12,650 on Dec 3, and the final payment of RM2,420 on Dec 25.

On Jan 3, the wedding planner’s crew was supposed to arrive around 8pm to instal the dais and floral arch.

“They only turned up at around midnight and did not even apologise for coming so late,” added Muhammad Izwan.

He said they finished installing the dais at 5.30am but did not instal the floral arch and walkway, forcing the claimant’s family to take over the job that they completed at 8am.

“The dais installed was totally different from what I had been shown and had chosen at the boutique.”

Tribunal president Hafez Zalkapli ordered the respondent to refund RM1,000 to the claimant within two weeks.
