A DOCTOR’S wedding preparations took an unexpected turn after the bridal boutique he had engaged announced financial difficulties just days before his big day.
Dr Lee Chee Leong said he paid RM2,500 to rent a suit and bridal gown from the Kuala Lumpur-based bridal shop on June 17, 2025.
He learned of the shop through a friend, who had previously rented wedding attire from them without any issues.
“My wedding was scheduled for Sept 28 last year,” he said of his nuptials in Johor Baru.
However, on Sept 19, he came across a social media post from the company saying they were facing financial constraints.
“I called the manager of the bridal shop immediately after seeing the social media post,” Dr Lee said when met outside the Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal in Johor Baru.
The claimant said he gave the company two days to confirm whether they could fulfil his order, but was dissatisfied with their response.
“After two days, I decided to take matters into my own hands and looked for another bridal shop in Johor.
“I managed to find one, but renting the outfits cost me RM2,800.”
Dr Lee contacted the original company on Oct 11, asking for a refund.
“The respondent later sent me a refund agreement through WhatsApp and promised to return the money within two months,” he said.
Dr Lee added that although he signed and returned the agreement the same day, he received no payment by the Dec 10 deadline.
Subsequent attempts to contact the respondent were unsuccessful, and upon visiting the premises earlier this year, he discovered the shop had closed down.
Tribunal president Lee Chee Thim ordered the respondent to refund RM2,500 to the claimant within 14 days.
