WHILE most people were asleep, a group of high-powered motorcycle riders in Penang hit the streets spreading kindness during Ramadan.

It was part of the Utara Bikers’ annual activity where they recently distributed more than 200 sahur food packets of fried rice and tomato rice to frontliners who worked through the night.

Its president Mohd Jahubar Sidek said the convoy of 20 motorcycles, a four-wheel drive and car, visited several hospitals, and police and fire stations from 11.30pm to 5am.

They began their journey from a cafe in George Town before heading to several locations including the Balik Pulau fire station, district police headquarters and a hospital.

“We then rode to the Bayan Lepas traffic police station and visited the Civil Defence Force unit in Sungai Ara,” said Mohd Jahubar.

The route also took them to the Bayan Baru police and fire stations, an area near Universiti Sains Malaysia, Lam Wah Ee Hospital and the Jelutong police station before completing the programme at the George Town police headquarters.

“We have been organising this programme since the early days of our club.

“It is our way of thanking frontliners especially during the fasting month,” he said, adding that the group, established 29 years ago, now consisted of 135 members.

Another biker group, Adventure Touring Motor Sport (ATMS) with more than 100 members, held a sahur get-together in Air Itam.

Its president Muhammad Arashid Ramli said it enabled them to plan charitable initiatives and outreach programmes.

“Besides riding, we want our members to be involved in meaningful activities such as charity drives,” he said.

“We hope to show that biker communities can play a positive role in society through activities that benefit the public.”
