Subang Jaya rubbish collection still impacted by lorry shortage

KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd (KDEBWM) has been asked to address ongoing waste collection problems until it gets necessary permits for all its lorries.

Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) councillor Lee Jen Uyin said several zones had not had regular rubbish collection since a new contract was signed with KDEBWM for waste collection and cleaning services two months ago.

“While the situation in my zone in Puchong is manageable, I was told that certain areas in Subang Jaya still have rubbish collection issues, likely linked to contractors in those areas not having enough vehicles authorised to operate.”

To address the transition period, she suggested KDEBWM consider renting compactors or using open roll-on, roll-off trucks for ad-hoc or emergency collection services.

“We are aware that KDEBWM is working hard to address the problem, but residents still cannot see improvement in waste collection despite MBSJ’s increased budget for the services,” added Lee.

She said councillors still received complaints on rubbish collection in both residential and commercial areas.

“We are also concerned that the delay in obtaining sufficient compactors is affecting the welfare of existing workers who have to work round the clock to make up for the collection problems.”

However, Lee, who is DAP whip, acknowledged some improvement in cleaning work with streets, parks and drains cleaned on schedule and streets in commercial areas swept at night.

She raised the matter during MBSJ’s full board meeting yesterday.

Last month, StarMetro reported on inconsistent rubbish collection due to difficulties faced by KDEBWM in getting mandatory permits from Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) to operate their rubbish compactors.

MBSJ was promised 77 rubbish compactors under its renewed contract with KDEBWM.

Subang Jaya mayor Datuk Amirul Azizan Abd Rahim said only 65 permits had been issued to date, which meant 12 compactors had yet to receive permits, thus continuing to affect waste collection services.

He said the constraints were on Apad’s side, which had yet to engage with MBSJ on the matter.

On Ramadan bazaars, Amirul Azizan said there were no complaints on illegal traders.

A total of 1,039 traders are operating at 20 Ramadan bazaars located in five zones - Subang Jaya, Kinrara, Puchong, Putra Heights and Serdang/Seri Kembangan.

MBSJ will also operate an Aidilfitri bazaar from March 3 to 19 at Dataran Niaga Puchong Permai, Puchong.

“A total of 63 traders have successfully applied for the 133 lots offered at this two-week bazaar,” said MBSJ Licensing Department director Nik Zalina Megat Muda.

“The conditions are similar to those for Ramadan bazaars, such as applicants having to be citizens and that they cannot sublet their lots.”
