The Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan set to kick off this year marks a new chapter in Sibu’s urban transformation and long-term economic growth.

Sarawak Deputy Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Michael Tiang called the plan, covering an area of more than 323ha, a milestone.

After four years of planning, studies and stakeholder engagement, Sarawak’s largest urban renewal project was now moving into the physical implementation stage, he said.

Tiang said the plan was not merely about reshaping Bukit Assek’s physical landscape; it was also designed to drive more sustainable, structured and inclusive economic development.

“This is a large-scale initiative that will have a direct impact on Sibu’s future.

“It also reflects the vision of Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg in advancing progressive urban renewal,” he told reporters after performing the lion eye-dotting ceremony at Tua Pek Kong Temple in Sibu.

Tiang, who is also Pelawan assemblyman, said the redevelopment of Bukit Assek would serve as a catalyst for public well-being and further strengthen harmony among Sibu’s multi-racial and multi-religious communities.
