RM3mil facelift planned for Ipoh’s Gerbang Malam

The planned upgrades at Gerbang Malam night bazaar include improving roof structure and lighting system.

PLANS are underway to give the Gerbang Malam night bazaar in Ipoh, Perak, a facelift.

Ipoh mayor Zamakhshari Hanipah said they had made an application to the Federal Government for about RM3mil to upgrade the facilities.

Zamakhshari said the planned upgrades include improving the roof structure and lighting system.

“Some upgrades are required for the comfort and safety of traders and visitors.

“We have made the application for the funds to be included in the 13th Malaysian Plan via the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry,” he said in a statement.

“The work scope involved connecting and strengthening the existing roof structure for better and safer coverage.

“The modern roof design not only functions as protection from the elements but is also designed to maintain good ventilation.

“The project would also involve upgrading the lighting system, with an aesthetic and tourist-friendly concept.

“The lighting system planned will highlight the identity of Gerbang Malam as an icon of the city, creating a more interesting environment,” he added.

Zamakhshari said Gerbang Malam has long been a focal point for tourists and locals, offering a unique experience that combines a lively environment, nice visuals and various products and entertainment.

“It stands proudly as a symbol of the city’s nightlife; it is not merely a physical structure.

“The upgrades will ensure the iconic location remains competitive and relevant as a primary tourist destination.

“The initiative would also open up more opportunities to the local community, especially small traders and entrepreneurs,” he added.

Separately, Zamakhshari said the air-conditioning system at Tun Razak Library would also be upgraded to provide comfort to visitors.

He said a RM700,000 had been allocated and work was expected to start in March.

“The work scope involves upgrading the electrical wiring system, air-conditioners as well as the toilets

“Work will be conducted in phases, to ensure daily operations are not impacted.

“Ipoh City Council (MBI) will also be cleaning the water fountain periodically,” he added.

On another issue, Zamakhshari said MBI, with the help of Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), had set up monkey traps at Gunung Lang Recreational Park.

He said this follows public complaints about the monkeys acting aggressively towards visitors.
