Rep: Upgrade of flood-prone Jln Sungai Maaw to finish soon

The frequent flooding of Jalan Sungai Maaw in Sibu, Sarawak, is expected to be resolved with the completion of a road upgrading project, ahead of schedule.

Bawang Assan assemblyman Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh said the project had achieved about 57% completion, putting it ahead of schedule.

He said the RM1.4mil project was initially slated for a six-month implementation period to March 31, but good progress on the ground had enabled earlier completion.

“If there are no issues, the project can be fully completed by the end of January.

“This is very important as the area is frequently affected by flooding, particularly during the rainy season,” Wong said during a site visit.

The 1.2km upgrading works involve construction of a premix road aimed at improving the road’s elevation and durability.

Wong highlighted that although Jalan Sungai Maaw had been upgraded in the past, flooding continued to pose challenges for residents and road users.

“With the current upgrading works, I hope the flood problem can be significantly reduced, providing a safer and more comfortable journey for residents,” he said.

He also emphasised that early completion of the project was crucial, as March typically recorded high rainfall in the area.

The project is funded through Wong’s Rural Transformation Programme and is being implemented by Zetramax Sdn Bhd.
