SIBU: Sibu MP Oscar Ling has highlighted significant shortcomings in the town’s basic infrastructure, particularly its roads and drainage systems, following recent floods.
While Ling welcomed the Premier’s RM2.5mil allocation for upgrading Jalan Ling Kai Cheng, he stressed that the amount is inadequate to address all affected roads.
"Additional funding is critical, as many low-lying roads in Sibu urgently require attention," he said in a statement on Monday (Feb 3).
One such area is Jalan Maaw (West Bank Sibu), connecting Engkilo to Sg Sadit, where severe flooding has disrupted residents' daily lives, making commuting to the city or work difficult.
Ling emphasized that this road is in desperate need of upgrading.
He also pointed out the ineffective flood control embankment at Lebaan in the West Bank, which fails to prevent frequent flooding whenever water levels rise.
Ling urged the government and relevant authorities to improve and maintain the embankment while reassessing the area’s overall planning.
Additionally, he stressed that Maaw Road, a high-traffic area, should be prioritized for upgrades.
"I hope the Sibu Municipal Council, Sibu Rural District Council, the Public Works Department, and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage will prioritize the improvement of roads and drainage systems in need of urgent attention," he said.
Ling also encouraged these agencies to seek government funding for these projects within the year, rather than waiting for another flood disaster to occur.
