Iskandar Puteri now Unesco learning city

Hasrin Kamal says joining GNLC will help MBIP pursue continuous personal growth for locals and build an inclusive urban future.

ISKANDAR Puteri City Council (MBIP) is Johor’s first local council and second in the country to join the Unesco Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC).

Iskandar Puteri mayor Hasrin Kamal Hashim said the city council was accepted as a GNLC member on Dec 4.

Petaling Jaya City Council in Selangor is the other local authority to join the global network with a membership of 72 cities from 46 counties.

Hasrin Kamal said the move reflected Iskandar Puteri’s continuous efforts to build a lifelong learning hub for everyone.

“On that note, MBIP will be launching new initiatives including digital community literacy programmes, community learning centres network and community engagement campaigns,” he said after the MBIP full board meeting.

He said the campaigns would integrate aspects of education, volunteerism and sustainable development.

“By joining the GNLC, we can gain expertise and create holistic, accessible and sustainable learning opportunities for everyone.

“This way MBIP can ensure continuous personal growth and a more inclusive urban future.”

GNLC is an international platform where cities collaborate to promote lifelong learning, share best practices and use education to foster sustainable development, social cohesion and economic prosperity for all citizens.

Coordinated by Unesco Institute of Lifelong Learning (UIL), it connects over 350 cities globally, helping to build inclusive learning environments from basic to higher education in families, communities and workplaces.

In a separate matter, Hasrin Kamal said 70,000 people took part in the Iskandar Puteri Local Plan 2035 (RTIP2035) Draft.

He said that each feedback received would be transparently assessed by a special committee before the plan was finalised.

He noted that MBIP’s social media platforms had received 56,770 views, 12,257 digital participations (Story Map, Web App and Microsoft form) while 976 people registered online for exhibitions, town hall sessions, community outreach and workshops.

“RTIP2035 is a master plan that guides the future development of Iskandar Puteri until 2035,” said the mayor.

It outlined the planning for residential areas, industry, business and road network to achieve the vision of a smart, sustainable and prosperous city, he added.
