Mohammad Fahmi: WiFi Smart Selangor coverage under review.
SELANGOR is working to improve its free Internet service to ensure better coverage and cost-effective implementation, especially in high-density areas.
State Islamic religious affairs and cultural innovation committee chairman Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah said the administration was exploring fresh implementation models, technical plans and suitable locations for the service.
“This is because there has been a drop in usage, driven by widespread use of personal networks, which have become cheaper.
“WiFi Smart Selangor has thus been deactivated temporarily, while we review its implementation and locations of coverage.”
Mohammad Fahmi said this during the Selangor State Assembly sitting at Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor in Shah Alam yesterday.
He was replying to Syed Ahmad Abdul Rahman Alhadad (PH-Lembah Jaya) who asked about the state’s plans to improve free WiFi coverage and speed in areas with sizeable populations.
Mohammad Fahmi said WiFi Smart Selangor would be reactivated in phases, targeting high-impact spots such as housing estates, schools, public libraries and community centres.
“We are working to ensure it has satisfactory speed and restricts access to harmful websites,” he said.
He added that the state government, via subsidiary Smartsel Sdn Bhd, also worked with PLANMalaysia to provide free WiFi at community centres in Kampung Taman Sri Baru (Ampang), Kampung Budiman (Kapar), Kampung Sungai Air Tawar (Sabak Bernam) and Kampung Endah (Banting).
These efforts, he said, were parts of Selangor Digital Future Action Plan 2026-2030 launched by Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari recently.
Mohammad Fahmi said Selangor was committed to achieving targets set by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to ensure comprehensive 5G coverage across the state in 2026.
As part of this effort, he said the commission and service providers carried out visits to 80 mosques this year.
“These were to check if the Internet speeds match the subscription packages that the mosques are paying for,” he added.
