PETALING JAYA: Selangor state will review stray animal management procedures across all local authorities, to mitigate animal cruelty issues following the recent death of a stray dog named Rocky at Port Klang.
The Selangor local government and tourism executive committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim said in a statement that this operation will include aspects of training, procedures and cooperation with the Department of Veterinary Services and stakeholders, to ensure enforcement operations are carried out more effectively and humanely.
“The Selangor government notes that the Klang Royal Municipal Council (MBDK) has lodged a police report regarding the incident, and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has opened an investigation paper to thoroughly investigate the matter,” he said in a statement on Aug 1.
“Accordingly, we fully entrust the police to conduct the investigation independently, transparently and professionally–and urge all parties to respect the investigation process and refrain from speculation.
He noted the Selangor government expresses regret over the incident that led to the death of a dog during a stray dog capture operation at Taman Teluk Gedung Indah, Port Klang.
“We view this matter seriously, as public safety and animal welfare are two responsibilities that must be preserved in balance.
“Every enforcement operation must be carried out professionally, prudently and in compliance with the law and established operating procedures,” Ng added.
Ng said in his statement that the state government also upholds the decree and statement of Her Majesty Tengku Permaisuri Selangor, which emphasised that compassion toward animals and the principle that no one is above the law must always be upheld by all parties.
“These values will continue to form the foundation of Selangor’s policies and actions.
“We remain committed to ensuring public safety is preserved while strengthening animal welfare practices and maintaining public confidence in the integrity and professionalism of government institutions,” he added.
