New Sekolahku portal to cover all institutions nationwide
PETALING JAYA: Parents will be able to access information on schools nationwide, including vacancies, programmes and available facilities, through a new centralised portal.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the Sekolahku portal would include schools in the rural areas, ensuring that none are left out.
He said information on some schools, particularly those outside urban areas, had previously been difficult to obtain, but the centralised platform would make it easier for the public to access such details.
“We do not want any situation where a school is left out or excluded from this effort.
“The Education Ministry has information on every school. It can also seek the cooperation of all schools to provide the necessary information to ensure that the portal contains complete information,” he said at the launch of the portal at SK Damansara Utama here yesterday.
Developed through a collaboration between the Education Ministry and Digital Ministry, the Sekolahku centralised platform is intended to spare parents from having to visit individual school websites or consult different sources for information.
“The portal is already live and available for public access,” Gobind said.
Asked about the number of schools covered, he estimated that the platform involves about 10,000 schools.
He said the initiative would also avoid having thousands of separate digital platforms created by individual schools.
Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek said the portal would allow parents to check school vacancies and identify those that are already full.
Previously, parents had to approach the ministry to obtain such information, she said.
She said the portal would also provide details of school programmes, including those offering the Dual Language Programme, allowing parents to consider options based on their children’s needs.
Students, particularly those preparing to enter Form One, could also use the platform to identify schools near their homes, explore boarding school options and find out how to get to their preferred schools, she added.
Additionally, she said the Education Ministry was also working with the Digital Ministry to strengthen the country’s digital education ecosystem while ensuring students could use technology safely.
Five schools are currently involved in a collaboration with Huawei to develop a safe digital ecosystem, while nine technical schools have also joined the initiative, she said.
Fadhlina added that digital skills would be further strengthened through the new curriculum for Year One and Form One pupils to be introduced next year.
“It will provide exposure to digital skills, but with one crucial caveat: you must always maintain proper ethics while navigating and using the digital world.
“Our artificial intelligence literacy guide is very important. You must ask better questions, rather than merely expecting it to give you answers,” she said.
