BORDERS, often invisible, can be challenged through the power of art.

At the launch of “Borderless Voices: Expanding Horizons” art exhibition, Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong said that unlike lines drawn on maps, people frequently created boundaries that influenced how they acted and viewed the world even when those boundaries were not real.

“It shapes our worldview and mindset,” he noted.

Sim expressed hope that the works at Art Space in ChinaHouse on Lebuh Pantai by 14 artists “will not only be an invitation, but a motivation to all of us to strive and achieve beyond imagination.”

The artists include Christine Das from Penang, Hazrii Kin from Kelantan, Syahbandi Samat from Sarawak and Jahabar Sadiq from Kuala Lumpur.

Works by international artists such as Danni Febriana, Dedy Sufriadi, Taufik Ermas and Oky Antonius from Indonesia, Dennis Bato, Pia Mercado and BLIC from the Philippines, Shinya Masuda from Japan, Aboud Fares from Syria and Thomas Powell from the United Kingdom are also on display at the exhibition ending Dec 14.

Bato’s collection of works titled “Transient Spaces: Shelter, Identity and the Environment” includes pieces inspired by the Pinoy jeepney, a symbol of Filipino ingenuity, resilience and culture.

Among those present at the launch were Penang Art Gallery chairman Lee Khai and exhibition organisers and Arthemis Art’s co-founders S. Jamal Al-Idrus and UC Loh.

Entry to the show is free.
