Canal festival in Sabak Bernam to go on despite vandalism

THE Ban Canal Carnival 2025 will proceed as scheduled this weekend in Sabak Bernam, with organisers undeterred by a recent vandalism incident.

A Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI) spokesperson in a statement said 40 banners and bunting promoting the event were torn down at Parit 14 and Parit 15 in Simpang Lima, near the carnival site.

“The vandalism is regrettable and could undermine the upcoming event.

“We wish to clarify that the banners were intended solely to promote this community-based event,” said the spokesperson.

“We strongly urge an end to such acts and encourage all members of the local community to participate in the carnival to help position Sabak Bernam as a premier destination for international-standard water sports and a leading hub for competitive, sustainable tourism,” said the spokesperson.

Now in its fourth edition, the carnival, scheduled to take place from Nov 7 to 9, brings throngs of local and foreign visitors for a weekend of water sports, cultural performances and educational exhibitions.

Organised by MBI through the Sabak Bernam Development Area (Sabda), the carnival supports the state’s efforts to nominate the district and its surrounding areas as a Unesco Biosphere Reserve.
