Malaysian masterpieces to take centre stage at Bangsar auction

Some of the artworks to be auctioned at KLAS tomorrow.

THE spotlight of Malaysia’s art world is set to be on KL Lifestyle Art Space (KLAS) in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, tomorrow.

Collectors and art enthusiasts will gather for an auction that promises to be more than just a sale.

It represents a significant cultural occasion that brings together passion, heritage and investment.

Since its founding in 2010, KLAS has evolved into one of Malaysia’s fine art auction houses, according to its press statement.

Under the leadership of Datuk Gary Thanasan, the institution has staged over 60 auctions featuring thousands of artworks by modern and contemporary masters since its inaugural auction in 2012.

Among the major highlights is Datuk Ibrahim Hussein’s Into The Night (1968) that is expected to fetch between RM550,000 and RM800,000.

‘East Coast Ladies’ is estimated to cost between RM3,000 and RM5,000.‘East Coast Ladies’ is estimated to cost between RM3,000 and RM5,000.

Another featured piece is Khalil Ibrahim’s East Coast Ladies (2001), estimated to cost between RM3,000 and RM5,000.

Adding to the excitement are two works by Yusof Ghani, namely Musang Berjanggut (1997) and Topeng II (1995).

Both paintings explore the tension between identity and expression, through vivid colour and dynamic composition.

The auction will also feature works by Datuk Chuah Thean Teng, the pioneer of batik painting, alongside watercolour master Yong Mun Sen, impressionist Abdullah Ariff and abstract expressionist Awang Damit Ahmad.

Each lot offered tomorrow is more than a collectable; it is a piece of national heritage waiting to find its next custodian.

The auction will begin at 1pm. For details, call 019-333 7668 (Nik) or email info@mediate.com.my
