A TOTAL of 14 teams involving 160 players will participate in the Penang Chief Minister’s Cup Badminton Championship 2025.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the third edition of the tournament would be held at Penang Chinese Recreation Club on Nov 1 and 2.

“Unlike previous editions which were held simultaneously at two separate venues, this year, the organiser will centralise the event at a single main location to provide a more comprehensive and focused competition experience for all participants.

“The matches will begin with the group stage, followed by the quarterfinals on Nov 1, while the semifinals and final will be held on Nov 2,” Chow said in a press conference at Komtar.

The prize-giving ceremony, to be held on Nov 2, would celebrate the players and volunteers during the two-day tournament, he added.

This year’s tournament offers a total cash prize of up to RM23,000 for the winners.

“The top two winning teams will take home RM10,000 and RM7,000 respectively, while the two teams that make it to the semifinals, will receive RM3,000 each,” he said.

Chow said following overwhelming response, this year’s tournament has attracted additional sponsorships from various parties.

Among them are flight tickets to Guangzhou, China, for two lucky draw winners, each consisting of a round-trip ticket from Penang to Guangzhou and a 4 days/3 nights travel package in Guangzhou.

“There are other attractive prizes, including five motorcycles and 30 lucky draw gifts to be won,” he said.

Chow added that the tournament was not merely a sporting event, but also a direct reflection of the Penang2030 aspiration to make Penang a liveable, smart and inclusive state.

He urged the public and private sectors, non-governmental organisations, and the corporate community, to continue supporting the tournament.
