KLANG Royal City Council (MBDK) has bagged the Malaysia Scroll of Honour Award under the category of Outstanding Organisation in Urban Crisis Response, in conjunction with the National World Habitat Day.
Housing and Local Government (KPKT) Minister Nga Kor Ming presented the award to Klang mayor Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain at Semarak Hall in Cyberjaya.
Abd Hamid said the recognition was given for the city council’s successful implementation of the project “Love Sungai Klang Action Plan: Sustainable City Initiative in addressing Environmental and Urban Crises”.
“Klang’s effort has successfully improved the Klang river ecosystem through coordinated clean-up activities and strong community participation.
“The action plan achieved a 60% reduction in plastic waste.
“It also improved water quality from polluted to moderately clean, and reduced flood incidents.
“MBDK thanks the stakeholders and local communities for their active involvement.
“Today, it stands as a national model for sustainable river management and ecological transformation,” said the mayor.
Abd Hamid said this approach aligned with the principles of sustainable development outlined in national policies.
Sungai Klang stretches 120km from Hulu Gombak to the mouth of the Straits of Malacca, close to Port Klang.
Sungai Klang’s river basin is in MBDK’s administrative area and the river meanders 21km through five housing areas and 11 villages, said Abd Hamid.
He said the area along the river saw rapid development, which also resulted in negative effects such as pollution.
“Improving river cleanliness is not only important to ensure clean water quality, but also helps to protect wildlife habitats,” he stressed. — By EDWARD RAJENDRA
