Flood-hit villages to benefit from Sg Kayu Ara upgrades, says DID

Maimunah briefing Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara and Kampung Chempaka villagers about DID’s river upgrading works.

The second phase of river upgrading at Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara and Kampung Chempaka in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, is expected to address long-standing flood problems faced by villagers.

Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) Petaling district director Maimunah Abu Hassan, in a briefing for affected villagers at Kampung Chempaka Community Hall, said the project would be completed in June 2026.

She said the 1.3km flood mitigation project was being carried out along Sungai Kayu Ara from the Sri Maha Kaliama Temple to Jalan Emas 1.

“The project will include construction of a 2m-high retaining wall, river bank protection, drainage outlet structure, pump gate and Tenaga Nasional compact sub-station,” she said.

“The total cost is RM16,150,559 for the 24-month project.”

Maimunah said the upgrades were necessary as existing monsoon drains could no longer cope with heavy rainfall.

In April, 40 village homes were flooded after a two-hour downpour brought 103mm of rain.

Maimunah said rainfall of more than 60mm could cause floodwaters up to 0.45m.

“Besides heavy rain, surrounding developments also contributed to the flash floods.

“The first phase of the project was completed Nov 8 last year.

“Once the project is completed, DID plans to instal closed-circuit TV cameras and sirens as precaution in case water levels rise,” she elaborated.

At the briefing, Bandar Utama assemblyman Jamaliah Jamaluddin, with Petaling Jaya City Council’s help, presented cash aid and food baskets to 27 flood victims.
