Work underway to boost stormwater capacity at five OSD sites
Desilting work is underway at on-site detention (OSD) ponds in Setia Alam, Shah Alam, to restore their capacity in managing stormwater runoff.
Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) councillor Simon Siow said the ponds needed desilting, to remove accumulated debris that hindered water flow and reduced their effectiveness.
“In total, there are five OSD ponds. Work on one pond, located at Central Park in Persiaran Setia Indah, has been completed,” he said.
Meanwhile, Siow said work was ongoing at ponds in Urban Park@Setia Taipan on Jalan Setia Gemilang U13/BG; Western Park at Persiaran Setia Impian, near Wisma SP Setia at Persiaran Setia Dagang, and Jalan Setia Gemilang U13/47.
Excavation works and removal of mud at all five ponds costing RM5.7mil was borne by developer SP Setia, he added.
During a site inspection at the OSD pond in Urban Park@Setia Taipan, Siow observed the ongoing desilting works as two excavators removed mud from both ends of the pond measuring 286m long and 45m wide.
“We need the OSD pond at Urban Park@Setia Taipan to reach a depth of 2.5m, allowing it to store surface runoff and gradually discharge the water, which will travel about 7km before emptying into Sungai Kapar Kecil in Klang,” he said.
“Work at all four OSD ponds is expected to be completed by mid-October.”
He said an effective OSD pond was designed to meet specific performance criteria, such as controlling peak outflow.
“MBSA wants the ponds to effectively manage sudden deluge due to continuous rain.
“Desilting ensures the ponds can effectively store excess water and release it slowly,” he said.
This will prevent downstream infrastructure and water bodies from being overloaded and causing localised floods, added Siow.
