SELANGOR is set to introduce a new intervention programme in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) aimed at improving student performance and preparing them for future challenges.
Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the initiative, which is still being fine-tuned, would draw inspiration from the “Program Tuisyen Rakyat Selangor” (PTRS) model.
He said he has reviewed several potential intervention modules, adding that the programme would be carried out with the Selangor Education Department.
He added that the focus was on raising students’ achievements in science and mathematics, while also strengthening their understanding of core subjects.
“This will be the foundation for developing Malaysia into a nation of creators,” Amirudin said in his National Day message to Selangor civil servants and elected officials at the MBSA Convention Centre in Shah Alam.
Amirudin, who oversees the state’s education and human capital development portfolio, said artificial intelligence (AI) would be placed under the STEM category, with new interventions to be introduced next year such as teacher training.
He acknowledged that current teaching methods might not be engaging enough compared to the allure of social media, and that improvements were needed.
“The content will remain the same, but the delivery methods must be enhanced,” he said.
“The state government is currently studying the relevant modules. We will announce the programme’s allocation in Selangor’s Budget 2026 and launch it in March or April next year.”
At the same event, Amirudin also touched on Selangor’s economic agenda, particularly the progress of the Integrated Development Region in South Selangor (Idriss).
Selangor would convene meetings in September with the stakeholders of Idriss, Sabak Bernam Development Area and Selangor Greater Klang Valley to review their progress and address challenges in implementing the masterplans, he said.
On the recent incident in Sabak Bernam where a student fell from the third floor of a school hostel, Amirudin said the police have yet to provide a full report.
“This case is being looked into seriously by the police and Selangor Health Department,” he said.
Amirudin said state rural development and unity committee chairman Datuk Rizam Ismail visited the injured student at the hospital and met with the family.
“He has assured them that the state government is prepared to support measures needed to ensure justice and a thorough investigation,” said the Mentri Besar.
He said state public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin would provide an update on the issue after the report was completed.
