THE Selangor government and Federal Territories Department have agreed on five measures to reduce flood risk across the Klang Valley, including reviewing two major dams, building new flood retention ponds and coordinating river dredging works.

A technical task force will meet within two weeks to finalise project locations, costs, funding and implementation, with initial proposals to be ready before the next Parliamentary sitting and the tabling of Budget 2027.

In a joint statement on Sunday (Aug 23), Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said both administrations had reached a consensus on land management, water storage, green spaces, sustainable urban development and water flow.

“Selangor and Kuala Lumpur must combine efforts to manage water flow from Hulu Selangor through Kuala Lumpur before it reaches the southern localities,” they said.

A key initiative is a long-term study of Batu Dam and Klang Gates Dam to determine whether their current capacity can meet water management needs over the next 20 to 30 years.

Technical agencies will also identify suitable upstream sites for new flood retention ponds, taking into account engineering feasibility, land status, environmental impact and flood reduction potential.

Three existing retention ponds — Kampung Laksamana, Sungai Kertas and Bukit Lagong — have been earmarked for possible upgrades to increase storage capacity.

"The Bukit Lagong project will require the degazettement of part of a forest reserve," read the statement.

The fifth measure involves synchronising river dredging and desilting works, including identifying a dedicated 12.1ha disposal site in Selangor for dredged sediment.
