MGS and ACS to hold joint 130-year celebration
SMK Perempuan Methodist (MGS) and SMK Methodist (ACS) in Ipoh, Perak, are marking their 130th anniversary this year.
The programme includes a joint celebration for the first time.
Organising chairman Dr Ting Cheh Sing said the celebrations on Saturday would feature day-long events before ending with a grand dinner at Casuarina@Meru Hotel.
Dr Ting, who is also MGS’ board of governors chairman, said the day would begin with a 6.30am Methodist Crisis Relief and Development Ipoh Run at MGS.
“We will then have a Methodist Education Expo at MGS, showcasing the legacy of our education.
“There will be workshops for educators, students and parents, as well as career guidance sessions,” he told StarMetro.
He said another highlight would be the launch of the Wesleyans’ Voice of Patriotism book, with Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh and Methodist Church in Malaysia (MCM) Bishop Dr T. Jeyakumar expected to attend.
“Other activities include a thanksgiving service at Wesley Methodist Church, a ‘Jom Balik’ alumni gathering at both schools and the opening of MGS’s new canteen.
“As for the grand dinner, about 1,100 people, including current and former students, parents, teachers and other stakeholders will be in attendance,” he said, noting that some guests were returning from abroad.
“For those planning to stay at the hotel, special corporate rates have been arranged for our guests, subject to availability,” he added.
Dr Ting said the idea for the joint celebration came naturally as both schools, established in 1895, were under the MCM.
“I made the suggestion and the Bishop was happy with it, so we proceeded with the planning.”
He highlighted that Methodist education had played a key role in nation building over a century.
