SUBANG National Golf Club (KGNS) has agreed to cede part of its fairway to make way for drainage and irrigation works to address flood woes in Jalan SS 7/2 in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
The land affected for the drainage project will be a 620m-long stretch parallel to Jalan SS 7/2, measuring 3,150sq m in total (see graphic).
A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed between Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and the 58-year-old club on April 25 at the latter’s premises.
Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohamad Zahri Samingon and KGNS president Abdul Majid Md Yusof put ink to paper, witnessed by MBPJ Engineering Department senior assistant director Mohd Aswardi Kong Mohd Azizi Kong and KGNS captain Lee Say Yong.
Under this agreement, the club will cede land less than half of the size of a football field at the Kelana Course.
Abdul Majid said discussions between KGNS and MBPJ began in 2023 with KGNS golf and ground sub committee member Kelvin Chong taking the lead.
Chong said the club was officially opened by first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj who became its first president.
“The land belongs to Perbadanan Padang Golf Subang (PPGS), a statutory body under the Youth and Sports Ministry.
“KGNS is the company appointed by PPGS to manage and administer the golf course.”
The decision for all parties to cooperate with MBPJ, he said, stemmed from a desire to seek a solution to recurring floods in Jalan SS 7/2.
“Whenever there is heavy rain, the drains will overflow.

“It was not uncommon for water levels to rise to knee level, bringing traffic to a standstill.
“The new drainage project will divert stormwater from this road through an underground pipe to the Kelana Jaya pond,” Chong added.
Giving a presentation of the work scope was Muhammad Fadhlullah Rahim, project manager of Emzek, the company appointed by MBPJ.
“Site preparation and demolition works have been scheduled from May 13 to June 9,” he said, adding that work was scheduled to be completed by Nov 5.
The new system will include 1.5m-wide precast U-drains, box culverts, a reinforced concrete sump and roadside scupper drains.
In his speech, Mohamad Zahri said the RM4.9mil project would be fully borne by MBPJ.
It will also include installation of a 200m-high netting to prevent stray golf balls from flying onto the road and an anti-climb fence.
“Maintenance of these structures will be under KGNS.
“This agreement will be until March 13, 2055, which is the expiration date of the land lease with PPGS.”
Mohamad Zahri added that the strategic cooperation with KGNS was agreed on without any compensation or rental.
