Get strict, supervise city road contractors

ROAD safety must never be compromised under any circumstance, especially when it involves public infrastructure works that directly affect the daily lives of road users.

I have observed that many contractors in the Klang Valley who are granted permits by local authorities like Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) to carry out roadworks – including excavation for pipes, utilities and other infrastructure – often fail to prioritise public safety.

While such works are necessary for development, the manner in which they are carried out raises serious concerns.

In many instances, roads that have undergone excavation are poorly reinstated.

Temporary patching is often done in a haphazard and substandard manner, leaving behind uneven surfaces, loose gravel and even small potholes.

These hazardous conditions pose a significant danger to road users, particularly motorcyclists who are most vulnerable to such defects.

This situation reflects not only negligence on the part of contractors but also a lack of effective enforcement and monitoring by local authorities that issue these permits.

To address these, I am calling for strict supervision by local authorities on all roadworks.

This must be backed by a clear set of safety compliance requirements including proper temporary and permanent road reinstatement.

Enforcement must also be swift and uncompromising.

There should be immediate rectification orders for unsafe road conditions, hefty fines and the blacklisting of negligent companies.

For those who repeatedly disregard public safety, permits must be withdrawn to send a clear message that road user safety is a priority.

Local authorities must recognise that granting permits comes with the responsibility to ensure that all works are carried out safely and professionally.

There must be zero tolerance for negligence that endangers lives.

Road users have the right to safe and well-maintained roads at all times.

Development must not come at the cost of public safety and health.
