Miri Petroleum Museum in Sarawak will be upgraded with new exhibits to help turn it into an edutourism attraction.
“It plays a very important role in sharing the history of Miri’s petroleum industry.
“One of my aims is to enhance its educational value and strengthen Miri as a tourist destination,” Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Chiew Choon Man said in a media statement.
Chiew, who is also Miri MP, said he had discussed sponsoring selected exhibits with Petrosains chief executive officer Ezarisma Azni Mohamad.
“I hope this will be successful and improve accessibility to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) experiences.
“Hopefully, in the near future, visitors can look forward to new exhibits,” he said of the museum on Canada Hill which also offers a panoramic view of the city.
Touching on his recent visit to Petrosains, The Discovery Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Chiew said there were several exhibits related to artificial intelligence and sustainability in food supply through crops and meal choices that impressed him.
“These exhibits are relevant and aligned with current scientific trends.
“There are many interactive exhibits that combine play with learning, creating a unique experience for visitors.”
He said the Visit Malaysia 2026 theme “Surreal Experiences” aligned well with the role of science centres in delivering unique and enriching experiences.
“These centres serve as spaces where concepts learned in textbooks come to life.
“They are also important learning platforms for the next generation to learn to care for our environment, encouraging responsible behaviour and sustainable practices.
“Beyond being excellent educational spaces, science centres are valuable tourist attractions.
“They are fun, family-friendly and offer insight into the application of technology in Malaysia.
“Additionally, they serve as key destinations for educational tourism, attracting school groups which include international visitors on study trips,” Chiew said.
