AN underground water detention facility costing RM765,100 is being constructed at the junction of Persiaran Tujuan and Persiaran Kewajipan in Subang Jaya, Selangor, to mitigate floods.
The project by Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) began in January this year and is expected to be completed by October, said Subang Jaya assemblyman Michelle Ng in a statement.
“This stretch of road has been prone to recurring floods, especially in 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022 and 2024.
“This area is the lowest point in the Subang Jaya constituency, and rainwater easily accumulates here.
“Furthermore, water discharge slows in this area as the terrain tapers toward USJ1 and USJ14 before eventually flowing into Sungai Klang.”
Ng said that while previous incidents of flooding did not enter residents’ homes, they had caused significant vehicle damage and severe traffic disruptions – particularly along Persiaran Kewajipan and Persiaran Tujuan, the two main arterial roads in Subang Jaya.
The primary function of the on-site underground detention facility, she said, was to temporarily store rainwater during downpours and release it gradually once the main drainage system has cleared.
She added that its secondary function was to prevent excess rainwater from overwhelming the drainage network, which could result in floods.
Ng also said that MBSJ planned to widen the road at this junction to improve traffic flow from Persiaran Kewajipan into Persiaran Tujuan.
This is the second underground water detention facility in the constituency, following the one built under Jalan SS19/6, in front of SJK (C) Lick Hung.
“This project complements other flood mitigation works, including the weirs built in 2023 along the monsoon drains in Persiaran Tujuan and USJ18, which help slow the flow of rainwater from upstream,” added Ng. — By SHEILA SRI PRIYA
