THE proposed construction of offices on land meant for an open-air carpark in Seri Kembangan New Village, Selangor, could set a bad precedent.
Puchong MCA Public Complaints bureau head Ivan Tan said it was not fair that the land at Jalan SK10/3, which he claimed was gazetted as an open-air carpark in 1991, had been given to a developer.
“After the gazettement, Selangor government acquired the land in 1992 and owners were given RM475,020 as compensation.
“This was done in accordance with Land Acquisition Act 1960.
“It sets a bad precedent when the land is then given to a private developer for a commercial project,” he said during a press conference at Seri Kembangan MCA branch office.
Tan said Puchong MCA would study whether it was constitutional for a commercial project to be approved on the land.
“We may take legal action.”
Before the carpark, there was a cinema at the site.
In a StarMetro article titled “Seri Kembangan folk irked by proposed building” on June 13, it was reported that a three-storey commercial project would be built on the 0.28ha land.
During a site visit, it was found that the land had been partially cordoned off.
Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) said in a media statement that the application was approved in March last year.
A total of 82 parking bays for cars, two for people with disabilities and 33 for motorcycles would be built alongside the project, said the statement.
Also present at the press conference was Seri Kembangan MCA service centre head Chuah Hooi Hong.
He questioned MBSJ approving the project before upgrades on Pasar Awam SK10, located near the land, were completed.
“Traders in the market, who were relocated to a temporary site in Jalan SK6/1 in April 2023, are allowed to park in this area.
“Now, with the commercial building coming up, where can the traders park?” he asked.
He also said that the paking bays allocated under the project would not be sufficient to meet demand.
A local daily quoted Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki as saying that the land was never gazetted as a carpark.
“I have checked with MBSJ and Petaling Jaya District and Land Office.
“If MCA has in its possession documents related to the gazettement, I suggest that they submit it to the relevant authorities for verification,” she told the daily.
